Life Story (as told at Service)

Created by Family 13 years ago
On April 13,1918, Chin Shih was born in Kobe, Japan. She came from a family that had achieved great success in international trade. She had 2 brothers and 3 sisters. At the age of 5, her family moved to Shanghai where she received her education. Later, she trained to become a teacher. In 1937, Mother traveled to Taiwan and met my grandfather, who worked for Mitsui & Company. They married and moved to Shanghai where their daughter Emily was born. After WWII they returned to Taipei, Taiwan and started a family business in international trade. There, they grew their loving family and had 2 sons (John and Kenny) and 2 more daughters (Dolly and Liang). While my father was building the business, my mother managed the household and every aspect of her children’s education and daily life. There was a saying in their household, “Once the teacher is off duty, the mom is on duty.” Ma was an excellent teacher, and though not all of her children were fond of studying, they all went on to finish graduate school programs in the fields of law, computer and business. My mother was a talented and well-traveled woman. She spoke 6 languages – Chinese, Taiwanese, Cantonese, Shanghainese, Japanese and conversational English. She was a great writer, painter, and Chinese calligrapher. She was skilled at various crafts and also a talented cook. So many friends still remember her delicious dishes. Today, 9 grandchilden continue her legacy. She loved us dearly and always spoke to us in our language and with respect. There was no generation gap. She was very proud of us. 5 years ago, grandma attended her 2 granddaughters’ MBA graduation. When others congratulated her, she would smile and say, “I have two!”. Last summer, she met her first great granddaughter. This year, another great granddaughter was added to the mix. Last week, on July 15th, we lost Mother. She suffered kidney failure at the age of 92. We hope that in her afterlife, she is reunited with Father. Mother, may you rest in peace. We love you and we'll miss you always.
